Table of Contents
As a blogger, you want more and more traffic to your blog. You don’t want to write great content, and only 10 or 100 people read it.
We are in the era of online writing and blogging. In fact, there is this belief held by many people in Nigeria that the easiest way to earn money (in USD) is to blog. With that understanding, many people venture into blogging without even thinking of a niche that they are passionate about. All they are thinking about is making money, and so, if it is entertainment that brings in the money, then entertainment blog it is.
And in case you didn’t know before now, the reason many bloggers in Nigeria close shop and pack up after maybe a year or two of blogging is because of poor traffic.
The question is – have you been having challenges getting traffic to your blog? If yes, then thank your stars because after reading this article, you will be able to achieve better results as regards to traffic to your blog.
Understanding your target audience
Before anything else, you need to find out what your niche is all about. Ask yourself what your audiences are looking for (keywords). When you find that, you should then work towards those keywords to deliver contents that will serve them well.
The Magic Thing About Keywords
Let me ask you a question. How would you feel if you were to rank on top of the page when people search for keywords in your niche? You will feel out of this world, right? Exactly!
There are hardly any words to define the fulfilment and happiness you will feel when you achieve that. You will just start getting the traffic you didn’t pay for being sent to your blog by Google. Wouldn’t that be great?
Keyword is the soul of online contents. The competition is high, and so everyone is rushing to make the most out of their website.
To get you started, here are some steps you can take to help you get more targeted traffic to your website:
Step 1
Find Out Your Current Rank On Google
This is the first thing you should do before searching for keywords. There is a famous saying in Nigeria that, “he who does not know where the rain started beating him will not know where the rain stopped beating him.” Type your primary keyword and see where your blog ranks at the moment; could be the 5th or the 10th page. Write it down. You can make use of this tool – free firefox Rank Checker. Just signup and you will be allowed to use it.
Step 2
Search For Keywords In Your Niche
This is where you need to search for keywords that are related to your niche. You should look out for keywords that are relevant and not just high competition keywords. Before now, the best and easiest way to get targeted keywords for any particular niche was to use Google Keyword Planner. Sadly, Google has pulled the plug on that one. And for a blogger in Nigeria or any other part of the world, this is something to worry about. You only get to gain full access to this tool if you have a paid plan as a Google Adwords user. But there is a way to work around it.
How You Can Get Targeted Traffic to Your Website in Nigeria
Choose High Search Keywords
As a blogger in Nigeria, you should be looking for keywords that have high search volumes per month. Most of the time, the high ranking keywords are highly competitive. But that shouldn’t deter you. Just get the highly competitive ones and those with low competition and use them to form long-tail keywords.

Make Use Of Keyword Tools
Since Google has shut the gate to its Keyword planner, you can make use of these free tools – Keyword tool, Keyword Keg, and Keyword Shitter to search for keywords in your niche. Just sign up, and you will be able to use the websites.
So, for instance, if your niche is Agriculture, you could search for something like – “Agriculture in Nigeria.” The keyword tool will return exact terms and other keyword ideas and show you their monthly searches and competition.
Since your niche is agriculture, you can also search for other terms like farming, maize farming, yam farming in Nigeria and you will be provided with relevant keywords.
So there you have it; utilise these suggestions when writing your next post and after a week, recheck your rank in Google. Your website won’t land on the first page overnight. But with experimenting with different keywords in your niche, sharing your article on social media, and backlinking to other related websites in your niche, you will notice visible positive changes with an increase in the number of people that visit your website on a daily basis.
